The following is an example of our AI programming for Valerie.  She will be
programmed in English so that anyone can program her not just professional
programmers.   Each sentence will constitute a procedure which the android
will perform.   The verb in the sentence will be used to select which procedure
will be performed.


Procedure Wash.
The defaults for this procedure are:
   1. The default time is now.
   2. The default case is case 1.
   3. The default location is the kitchen sink.
End of defaults.
The number of cases currently defined is 19.
Case 1 is Wash the dishes.
Case 2 is Wash the dishes in the dishwasher.
Case 3 is Wash the dishes in the sink.
Case 4 is Wash the glasses.
Case 5 is Wash the plates, bowls, and dishes.
Case 6 is Wash a/the glass.
Case 7 is Wash a/the plate, bowl, or dish.
Case 8 is Wash the pots and pans.
Case 9 is Wash a/the pot or pan.
Case 10 is Wash the flatware and cooking and serving utensils.
Case 11 is Wash a/the knife, fork, spoon, cooking utensil or serving utensil.
Case 12 is Wash the windows.
Case 13 is Wash the window.
Case 14 is Wash the clothes.
Case 15 is Wash a/the load of white clothes.
Case 16 is Wash a/the load of delicate clothes.
Case 17 is Wash a/the load of colored clothes.
Case 18 is Wash a/the load of sheets and blankets.
Case 19 is Wash a/the load of rugs.

Case 1:  Wash the dishes.
   1. Is there a working automatic dishwasher which I have permission to use 
      in the home?
   2. If so, perform Case 2; otherwise perform Case 3.

Case 2:  Wash the dishes in the dishwasher.
   1. If you have not learned how to operate the dishwasher, then
      learn how to operate the dishwasher.
   2. Put away uneaten food.
   3. Clear the dinner table if necessary.
   4. Rinse each dish, plate, and eating utensil.
   5. Fill the dishwasher.
   6. Put the dishwashing detergent in the dishwasher.
   7. Close the dishwasher.
   8. Turn on the dishwasher.

Case 3:  Wash the dishes in the sink.
   1. Put away uneaten food.
   2. Clear the dinner table if necessary.
   3. Plug the sink.
   4. Put the glasses in the sink.
   5. Fill the sink half way with water.
   6. Add liquid detergent to the water.
   7. Wash the glasses one at a time until they are all washed.
   8. Put the dishes in the sink.
   9. Wash the plates, bowls, and dishes one at a time until they are all washed.
  10. Put the flatware and cooking and serving utensils in the sink.
  11. Wash the flatware and cooking and serving utensils one at a time until they 
      are all washed.
  12. Wash the pots and pans one at a time until they are all washed.
  13. Unplug the sink.
  14. Remove food particles from the sink.
  15. Rinse the sink.

Case 4: Wash the glasses.
The defaults for this procedure are:
   1. The default time is now.
   2. The default method is one at a time.
End of defaults.
   1. Reach into the sink and pick up any glass.
   2. Wash the glass.
   3. Rinse the glass.
   4. Place the glass in the drying area.
   5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 until all the glasses have been washed.

Case 5:  Wash the plates, bowls, and dishes.
The defaults for this procedure are:
   1. The default time is now.
   2. The default method is one at a time.
End of defaults.
   1. Reach into the sink and pick up any plate, bowl, or dish.
   2. Wash the plate, bowl, or dish.
   3. Rinse the plate, bowl, or dish.
   4. Place the plate, bowl, or dish in the drying area.
   5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 until all the plates, bowls, and dishes have 
      been washed.

Case 6:  Wash a/the glass.
   1. Grasp the outside of the glass with one hand.
   2. Pick up the wet washcloth.
   3. Insert the wet washcloth into the open end of the glass.
   4. Rotate the washcloth and glass against each other.
   5. Put down the washcloth.
   6. While holding the glass with its open end downward,
      insert one or two fingers into the glass if they will fit.
   7. Pick up the washcloth with the other hand and wipe 
      the outside of the glass gently.

Case 7:  Wash a/the plate, bowl, or dish.
   1. Grasp the plate, bowl, or dish with one finger inside and the other 
      fingers under it.
   2. Pick up the wet washcloth.
   3. Use the wet washcloth to wipe the inside of the plate, bowl, or dish.
   4. Put the washcloth down in the sink.
   5. Turn the plate, bowl, or dish over.
   6. Pick up the wet washcloth.
   7. Use the wet washcloth to wipe the outside of the plate, bowl, or dish.
   8. Put the wet washcloth down in the sink.

Case 8:  Wash the pots and pans.
The defaults for this procedure are:
   1. The default time is now.
   2. The default method is one at a time.
End of defaults.
   1. Reach into the sink and pick up any pot or pan.
   2. Wash the pot or pan.
   3. Rinse the pot or pan.
   4. Place the pot or pan in the drying area.
   5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 until all the pots and pans have been washed.

Case 9:  Wash a/the pot or pan.
   1. Grasp the pot or pan by its handle if it has one, otherwise;
      grasp the pot or pan with one finger inside and the other fingers under it.
   2. Pick up the wet washcloth.
   3. Use the wet washcloth to wipe the inside of the pot or pan.
   4. Put the washcloth down in the sink.
   5. Turn the pot or pan over.
   6. Pick up the wet washcloth.
   7. Use the wet washcloth to wipe the outside of the pot or pan.
   8. Put the wet washcloth down in the sink.

Case 10:  Wash the flatware and cooking and serving utensils.
The defaults for this procedure are:
   1. The default time is now.
   2. The default method is one at a time.
End of defaults.
   1. Reach into the sink and pick up any knife, fork, spoon, cooking utensil or 
      serving utensil.
   2. Wash the knife, fork, spoon, cooking utensil or serving utensil.
   3. Rinse the knife, fork, spoon, cooking utensil or serving utensil.
   4. Place the knife, fork, spoon, cooking utensil or serving utensil 
      in the drying area.
   5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 until all the knives, forks, spoons, 
      cooking utensils and serving utensils have been washed.

Case 11:  Wash a/the knife, fork, spoon, cooking utensil or serving utensil.
   1. Grasp the knife, fork, spoon, cooking utensil or serving utensil by 
      its handle.
   2. Pick up the wet washcloth.
   3. Use the wet washcloth to wipe the exposed portion of
      the knife, fork, spoon, cooking utensil or serving utensil.
   4. Put the washcloth down in the sink.
   5. Grasp the other end of the knife, fork, spoon, cooking utensil or 
      serving utensil.
   6. Pick up the wet washcloth.
   7. Use the wet washcloth to wipe the handle of
      the knife, fork, spoon, cooking utensil or serving utensil.
   8. Put the wet washcloth down in the sink.

Case 12:  Wash the windows.
The defaults for this procedure are:
   1. The default time is now.
   2. The default location is this room.
End of defaults.
   1. Collect the tools required to wash windows.
   2. Select the first window.
   3. Wash the window.
   4. Select the next window.
   5. Repeat steps 3 & 4 until all windows are washed.

Case 13:  Wash the window.
   1. Select first window pane.
   2. Spray window washing fluid on that window pane.
   3. Use washing paper towel or rag to scrub that window pane.
   4. Use a drying paper towel or rag to dry that window pane.
   5. Select the next window pane.
   6. Repeat steps 2 to 5 for each pane.

Case 14:  Wash the clothes.
The defaults for this procedure are:
   1. The default time is now.
   2. The default location is the room which contains the washing machine.
End of defaults.
   1. If you have not learned how to operate the clothes washer, then
      learn how to operate the clothes washer.
   2. If you have not learned where the dirty clothes are deposited
      for washing, then learn where the dirty clothes are deposited
      for washing.
   3. Collect the clothes to be washed from the locations where dirty
      clothes are deposited for washing.
   4. Separate clothes into five piles:  one for white clothes, the second for 
      delicate fabrics, a third for colored clothes, a fourth for sheets and 
      blankets, and a fifth for rugs.
   5. Wash the load of white clothes.
   6. Wash the load of delicate fabrics.
   7. Wash the load of colored clothes.
   8. Wash the load of sheets and blankets.
   9. Wash the load of rugs.

Case 15:  Wash a/the load of white clothes.
   1. Make sure the clothes washer is empty.
   2. Place the white clothes in the washer.
   3. Add the required soap and bleach to the washer.
   4. Turn on the clothes washer.

Case 16:  Wash a/the load of delicate clothes.
   1. Make sure the clothes washer is empty.
   2. Place the delicate clothes in the washer.
   3. Add the required soap and bleach to the washer.
   4. Turn on the clothes washer.

Case 17:  Wash a/the load of colored clothes.
   1. Make sure the clothes washer is empty.
   2. Place the colored clothes in the washer.
   3. Add the required soap and bleach to the washer.
   4. Turn on the clothes washer.

Case 18:  Wash a/the load of sheets and blankets.
   1. Make sure the clothes washer is empty.
   2. Place the sheets and blankets in the washer.
   3. Add the required soap and bleach to the washer.
   4. Turn on the clothes washer.

Case 19:  Wash a/the load of rugs.
   1. Make sure the clothes washer is empty.
   2. Place the rugs in the washer.
   3. Add the required soap and bleach to the washer.
   4. Turn on the clothes washer.
