We have the face muscles working pretty well now and we are nearly done. Final
details remaining are to add the eye brows, the eye lashes, the lip color, the ears, and
perhaps some makeup too. Then we will make an avi file of Valerie talking which will be
added to this page - hopefully by the end of the month.
Includes 5 AI projects
- Image recognition: Each of the two color video cameras will provide images which can be
used for image recognition.
- Depth perception: By combining the images from both cameras, you should be able to
determine the distance the objects in the images are from the cameras. Then, by using a
little trigonometry, you should be able to calculate their position in 3D space.
- Speech recognition: The head has two microphones to capture speech or other sounds. Also
provided are various off-the-shelf speech recognition programs. You can either use the
software we have provided or write your own as an exercise.
- Speech synthesis: The head contains a speaker which is able to play .wav files. We have
provided the AT&T Advanced Technology Speech synthesizer program and a Visual C++
project to drive it. This project will allow you to enter text, run it through the
AT&T program to produce a .wav file, and to send the .wav file to the speaker in the
head.
- Jaw and facial muscles: We have provided software which will allow you to control the
muscles of the face and jaw. They can be used to make expressions and to make the mouth
actions match the spoken words. The software is also capable of playing .wav files at the
same time that the muscles are moved thus giving you accurate coordination of the two.
